The Hidden Himalayas
The extraordinary lives between rainforest and ice
A natural history film in production, seeking international funding and co-production partners.
Beneath the Himalayan peaks, monsoon rain feeds forests, fills rivers, and becomes ice. Its journey connects lives separated by thousands of metres of altitude. The Hidden Himalayas follows those connections to reveal a mountain world in constant motion, where every opportunity to feed, breed, or raise young depends on timing.
Format: 1 × 52-minute international special
Additional format under consideration: 90-minute feature
Target delivery: 2028–2029
A Hidden Himalayan World
At the eastern edge of the Himalayas, the forests of Medog rise towards alpine meadows and glaciers. Beyond the ridge, the land opens onto the dry Tibetan Plateau.
Across nearly 7,000 metres of vertical altitude, the film explores how water connects these contrasting environments. Monsoon rain brings abundance to the forest, but also competition. Higher up, retreating snow opens brief feeding and breeding seasons. Beyond the mountains, animals must travel vast distances between scattered sources of water and food.
Through intimate animal stories, the film reveals the relationships that hold this landscape together. Each encounter becomes part of a larger story about life’s dependence on a changing environment.
Lives on the Edge of Change
Inside a tree hollow, a red panda mother shelters her cub. Soon, it must leave that protection and learn the forest before the season turns.
On the slopes above, takin follow fresh growth into increasingly difficult terrain. Near the snowline, the movements of grazing animals create opportunities for a waiting predator. Across the plateau, antelope travel towards calving grounds while black-necked cranes raise young in wetlands where too much water can be as dangerous as too little.
Survival gives the film its emotional stakes. The movement of water connects these individual struggles across an extraordinary mountain world.
The Story So Far
The production has secured RMB 3.5 million, with two filming expeditions to Medog completed in April and June 2026.
The team has recorded a near-complete wild red panda family sequence, following a mother and cub through care in the den, emergence, exploration, and eventual separation. Further sequences are filmed or underway across the monsoon forest.
Established local access and field relationships support repeated visits across seasons. This continuity allows the team to observe elusive wildlife and develop behavioural stories over time.
The next phase will expand filming into alpine habitats and plateau wetlands, while completing key forest sequences.
An Invitation to Collaborate
We are seeking USD 500,000–700,000 in international financing and partners who share the ambition to bring this connected portrait of the Himalayas to a global audience.
We welcome co-producers, funders, broadcasters, and platforms interested in supporting the next production phase and developing the international version. Opportunities also include pre-buys, distribution, and post-production partnerships.
The planned international delivery includes a dedicated edit and English-language narration, supported by music, colour grading, and sound design. A feature-length version remains under consideration.
With filming underway and compelling behaviour already recorded, partners have the opportunity to contribute to the film’s creative development, completion, and international reach.
